Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
EFL v Bristol Rovers

Academy away against League 1 side Bristol Rovers tonight.

Hopefully we will play a strong U23 side and be interesting to see how they get on at a decent mid table Rovers.

Anyone going?

So why would they sign him in the first place?

"He is now a crowd favourite at Luton Town by the way. Good goalie never given a chance with us."

And has clearly found his level.

Trundle, you haven’t grasped the script here

Players signed who bomb are Sullivan’s signings

Bilic can’t play youth players because of Sullivan

Bilic is gagged from saying what’s really happening because of Sullivan

So, it might have been Bilic, but really it was Sullivan

With Carroll and Sahko out Martinez on the bench v Brighton seemed an obvious opportunity
Instead we had two full backs. For a home game against Brighton

Of course then the following week away from home we might have needed an extra defensive player so we had one full back
So ended up with Antonio patrolling the right back position by playing closer to Palace’s corner flag than ours
Just another in a list of ill judged selections

Wasn't it Bilic who said that?

"We lost a world-class player in Payet but we got two players in Snodgrass and Fonte who are the those (type of) players you need around the skipper (Noble) to make your ‘government’ if you know what I mean!" Bilic said on whufc.com.

“Snodgrass is British and Fonte is Portuguese but he is also ‘home-grown’ because he has been here for ten years now, so we are more thick as a team, more mature, you know.

“It’s vital and crucial because, as a manager, of course you are the boss and have the power and responsibility but, especially when it comes down to small things, you can’t tell the players the same thing every day, because then you are losing power.

“So, the best thing is when the players sort it out among themselves and you don’t have to interfere, which is why it’s important for me to have a core of English or British, let’s say home-grown, players."

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
never seen Bilic or any of his staff at u18 games, and have only seen Bilic twice at an u23 game in 3 years and that is only if a 1st team player is playing

I remember Harry and Frank would be at every game possible during there time in charge, even going to youth games in the morning before 1st team games at Upton Park.

But in our situation cannot see him risking any of the youngsters he will play a 80% fit Collins on Saturday rather than start Rice

Nathan Holland is the only natural winger we have and should be on the bench big future hopefully at West Ham

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
Or the other side of the story is that Sullivan insisted on British players in the January window.
Hence Snodgrass and Fonte whom Sullivan deemed as 'British type' as was an established Premier League player.

If there is any truth in the rumour, then Bilic is a bigger patsy than I thought. We are truly fucked with these owners.

There was another one other than Zaza, a few seasons back.

Why would I make it up? It was also mentioned on KUMB on the evening of the Brighton game.

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
Bilic picks the team, not Sullivan.

He just prefers experience over youth, which is the real reason why Martinez hasn't had a look in. That's why he purchased players like Fonte and Snodgrass.

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
That was Zaza ornchurch. We would have had to buy him according to the loan deal if he did more than a few games. He proved useless and I certainly wouldn't blame Sullivan from stopping that one. That was just common sense.

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
Goalkeeper Marek Stech was an example of this sort of thing. He never played for the first team because it would have meant a substantial payment to his original club Sparta Prague. He eventually left the club after Sullivan and Gold had taken over West Ham. Surprise, surprise.
He is now a crowd favourite at Luton Town by the way. Good goalie never given a chance with us.

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
This rumour started after the Brighton game when Carrol and Sakho were unavailable and it would have made perfect sense to have Martinez on the bench.

It could be bollocks but I see it as the sort of thing that Sullivan would do. Who was the player, possibly on loan, we had a few seasons back who suddenly stopped being picked as it would have meant an extra payment?

Willtell 10:33 Wed Nov 1
Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
Well it's a nice conspiracy theory except for one thing. Why would we have a multi-million pound U21 team if we didn't want to play them in 1st team?

I'm sure that if Bilic wanted the lad he would be picked. I dare say he's more worried about fitting Carroll, Sakho and Arnautovic in the side first.

The truth is Bilic is probably not interested in blooding a young player who may or may not work out right while his neck is constantly feeling the noose tighten...

ornchurch ammer 10:25 Wed Nov 1
Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
A lot of deals for young players include a lump sum payment when they make a first team debut.

I for one can certainly see Sullivan refusing to sanction a £1m plus payment for what could potentially be a one off appearance.

Re: Bristol Rovers - West Ham U23
I thought "so what" when I heard that Martinez had scored twice but, when you look at it, our U21s played in the Checkatrade Cup against League 1 opposition.

Sure Bristol Rovers made changes but they had to play 7 first teamers from the previous League 1 game from the rules according to Westley. He also said that the benchmark showed that most of the U21 team could play at League 1 level now. Captained by Rice too....
